An excellent introduction to stoicism. Using simple language and easy to understand examples, the author shares the teachings of the great Greek and Roman stoic philosophers. This is very similar to the message Victor Frankl wrote in Man’s Search for Meaning, where he stated what matters is not what happens to us but how we respond to it.

It’s telling that one of the books Nelson Mandela took with him to prison was stoic Roman leader Marcus Aurelius’s journals.

Though these stoic teachers lived thousands of years before us, we have much to learn about mental stamina, self-control, courage and how we treat others from them. The author simplifies their lessons and shows us how how Perception, Action and Will can allow us to create a life that responds to what happens to us intelligently, without succumbing to it or feeling defeated.

This book was not written for philosophers who inhabit ivory towers, but for us regular folk who deal with the everyday mundane world and yet desire to live a fulfilled and meaningful life of integrity, no matter what life throws our way.
